Jio

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (Jio) is the largest telecom company in India and offers a unique combination of telecom, high speed 4G internet data, digital commerce, media and payment services.

The Objective

We were tasked to reimagine and enhance the experience of everything that Jio has to offer and we got the opportunity to really work with and realize Jio’s vision… to transform India with the power of digital revolution – to connect everyone and everything, everywhere.

MyJio – The super app

A large part of the project I was responsible for the super app MyJio.

“MyJio is your one stop destination for recharges, UPI and payments, managing Jio devices, Movies, Music, News, Games, Quizzes & a lot more…”

The core of the app is still telco (mobile & fiber) focused, but branches out to everything that Jio has to offer in form of mini-apps within MyJio and external Jio apps.

This was a big piece to work with – building a super app that basically offers everything, as well working on all the mini-apps – how the logic and navigation should work.

A world of apps and services

Jio offers a full range of apps and services for your everyday life and MyJio is the gateway that funnels you further into the world of Jio.

We worked on creating a robust framework for these apps. A framework that would ensure that the user interface, logic and strategy of the apps would be consistent.

Jio.com

Another important part of the project was to rebuild the core website, jio.com, that would be more about promotion and less utility compared to MyJio.

As I was primarily involved in building Jio’s wide range of Apps, the website was not my main responsibility. However, I still got the chance to contribute and work on some of the pages on Jio.com. Shout out to all the guys on the dotcom team!

DESIGN SYSTEM

In this project, we worked with a huge design system that would act as the backbone and foundation of everything we did to ensure consistency in the UI/UX.

We started off by re-skinning the current solutions to stress-test the design system and to apply all the correct tokens and components, as well as evaluate what we were missing. This involved training the in-house staff from Jio to ensure that they could handle the Design System and its logic on their own when we handed over everything.

As work progressed within the different applications and main website, we made consistent iterations to improve and update, as well as, introduce new components.

Big up to everyone on the DS team!

User Testing

We performed a number of both moderated and unmoderated usability tests in order to uncover problems in our designs as well as discover new opportunities and explore different solutions. Given that we are primarily building a solution for the people of India we performed these tests remotely using a platform called UserFeel.

Our setup basically consisted of

  • Day 1: Plan the study
  • Day 2: Test the 5 users
  • Day 3: Analyze the findings and convert them into redesign recommendations for the next iteration

Handover

Our team from AKQA was hired as experts to kickstart Jio’s new journey to help them reach the next level.

Once the foundation was built for all the apps and website, as well as, the training of the design system and way of working was done, we started our handover. This consisted of packaging the new design and preparing the new files for Jio to take on to continue building and improving on their offerings.
